    What research says

With a complete redesign in 2006, the Suzuki Grand Vitara remains unchanged for the '07 model year. Nevertheless, and despite it's meritocracy, it is a stylish and capable SUV crossover.

Suzuki has long been known for its rough-and-tumble vehicles, almost always offering function over form. Recently, however, the Japanese auto firm has been placing an emphasis on modern, multipurpose vehicles like the XL7 and our Grand Vitara among its popular small car lineup.

Styling is well done with smooth, flowing lines and a new, aggressive front fascia that is solely Suzuki. The rear end is clean and sharp, although the right-swinging rear door is inconvenient as it completely blocks one side of access to the rear truck area. Inside, the interior feels economical with cheap plastics and cheesy "aluminum" adornments, but it is nevertheless a welcome change from the previous models. Controls are easy to reach and there is plenty of room for both front and backseat passengers, and even more for cargo with fold-flat rear seats

This mid-sized SUV crossover however is based on the GM Theta platform, with a new gearbox, engine, and four wheel drive system. The 185 horsepower, 2.7 liter V6 is torquey in the 0-15mph range, but falls short anywhere above that. Highway onramps are daunting with such little pickup in the mid-to-upper range; drivers can expect an armada of Blazers and Escapes to be following behind the Vitara until it reaches speed. Fuel economy is disappointing for such a small engine at 19mpg city and 23mph highway, although most drivers can expect 15-18mpg overall.

Wind and road noise are prominent, so you won't be able to hear the other drivers overtaking you on freeway hauls, either. Despite the urban performance, this is a great little off-roading machine. The engine is wonderful in first gear with the 4x4 system engaged, whether it be in AWD, four high, or four low. The underside is smooth and the important bits, like the transfer case and transmission, are well protected. Even with it's relatively low ground clearance at 7.9inches, rural climbs are consumed with ease.

While Suzuki used to place function over form, the new Grand Vitara seems like a good step forward towards a median of ability and style. The styling is fresh, and the practicality is good, but no notable feature is particularly excellent, minus the off road prowess that was impressive for what seemed like an urban family-hauler at first glance.
